Just two years ago, the question was simple: how do you rank in the first Google results. Today, a growing share of your potential clients no longer type a search into Google — they ask ChatGPT, Perplexity, or the AI assistant built into their browser directly, and get a ready-made answer, with or without a link to your site. If your business doesn't appear in that answer, it simply doesn't exist for that client — even if you rank number one on Google.
That's exactly the problem AEO solves.
What is AEO (Answer Engine Optimization)
AEO is the discipline of preparing your website and content to be understood, cited and recommended by generative AI — ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews — rather than just ranking well in a list of results.
The difference is concrete, not just theoretical:
- Classic SEO optimizes for ranking: your page appears in position 3 of 10 results, and the user clicks (or doesn't).
- AEO optimizes for selection: an AI reads multiple sources, extracts what best answers the question, and cites you directly in its response — no click involved, no list of competitors sitting next to you.
A generative AI doesn't "keep reading" to find the right information the way a person scanning a page would — it needs the answer to be clear, verifiable and available from the very first lines of content.
Why now, not in two years
Three concrete reasons, not speculation:
- Search behavior is genuinely changing. A growing share of users now start their search with a question to a conversational AI instead of a classic Google query — especially for complex or comparative questions, exactly the kind of question a business owner asks before picking a provider.
- Search engines themselves now embed AI-generated summaries (Google AI Overviews leading the way) directly above the results — even users who still type into Google increasingly get a generated answer before the classic list of links.
- No fixed standard exists yet, which is a rare opportunity: businesses that adapt now have a real head start over those that wait until it becomes a mandatory standard — the same thing happened with mobile-first SEO a few years ago.
AEO doesn't replace SEO — it depends on it
This is the most misunderstood point: AEO doesn't work without solid SEO behind it. Most generative AIs that answer with real-time sources rely on classic search engine indexes to find reliable content to cite. A site invisible to Google has very little chance of being cited by an AI — AEO builds on top of solid SEO foundations, it doesn't replace them.
In practice, the two disciplines share a good part of the work (quality content, clear structure, Schema.org structured data) and diverge on one specific point: SEO stops at "being found," AEO goes as far as "being understood and cited without ambiguity."
What AEO actually changes on a website
llms.txt: a file at the site root, on the same principle asrobots.txt, that explains to an AI agent what your business is and where to find reliable information.- AI-aware
robots.txt: explicitly allowing the main AI crawlers (GPTBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot...) instead of leaving them outside any explicit rule. - Answer-first content: every key section should give the complete answer from the first sentence, before the detail.
- Structured data (Schema.org) that's current, consistent and free of duplicates — a simple technical point, often overlooked, that makes a real difference.
Our own test, unpolished
We applied all of this to the AIA Studio Project website this week. First honest data point: at the time of publishing, ChatGPT didn't know us yet — expected, indexing new content by an AI takes weeks, not hours. But the same test revealed something useful immediately: the real competitors an AI spontaneously cites in our market, which let us sharpen our own positioning without waiting for the final result. AEO produces value even before it's "finished" — it's also a competitive intelligence tool.
What to take away
- AEO isn't a trend: it's a direct response to a real shift in search behavior.
- It doesn't replace SEO, it builds on it — the two are worked on together, not against each other.
- Businesses preparing now, before it becomes a mandatory standard, have a real, measurable advantage.
At AIA Studio Project, we fold AEO into our existing SEO support — audit, technical setup and tracking citations across the main AI systems.
